Stock image of canoe moulds. The models you see in that photo are from the left front is the Miller model built in 1925 by my grandfather and is the Miller model canoe that the Chestnut Ogilvy was made from! the story goes in early 1927 or so Mr.Chestnut was visiting Jock Ogilvy's fishing lodge on the Tobique at Gulquac, they were out in a Miller canoe one of the first that my grandfather had built . Mr Chestnut had asked Jock if they could pole up and fish the mouth of the Gulquac river, Jock raised the anchor, lit his pipe and was smoking with one hand and poling with the other hand. Harry turned around to ask a question and saw him poling with just one hand and commented " I never saw a man pole a canoe with just one hand before... Jock Said it is a Miller Canoe vic Miller built it in nictau and hewed it out with an axe! it was a bit on the crude side! Anyway Harry looked it over noticed the flat bottom, noted its stability and how easy it was to pole, and told Jock to bring it down to Fredericton in the fall when he was finished using it so they could take some lines off it. Jock took the canoe down, they took the lines off it and built a new model from the lines and named the new model after Jock, and the Chestnut Ogilvy canoe was born. It was one of the best selling canoes Chestnut made.
